Situation:
61-year-old female was on HRT but recently stopped.
Risk Factors:
- 11 years postmenopausal
- Family history of osteoporosis
- Current smoker
DXA Report:
Average density of L1 through L4 is 1.013 grams/cm2. Values are 115 percent that of age-matched mean (1.18 SD above 61-year-old mean) and 97 percent that of young-normal mean (0.31 SD below 30-year-old mean).
Average density of the total left hip is 0.861 grams/cm2. Values are 105 percent that of age-matched mean (0.34 SD above 61-year-old mean) and 91 percent that of young-normal mean (0.66 SD below 25-year-old mean). Average density of the left femoral neck is 0.95 SD below 25-year-old mean.
Does she have osteoporosis, osteopenia, or normal bone density? Would you treat this patient with medications for low bone density?
