Common Questions

Is screening for osteoporosis recommended in elderly men without risk factors?

Screening for osteoporosis in elderly men without risk factors starting at age 70 is now recommended by the National Foundation of Osteoporosis based on recent epidemiological studies (1). Men can develop osteoporosis, but it is typically later in life than women. Bone density in males decreases with age, lagging about 5 years behind normal bone loss in women (2).
