Common Questions
In what form is calcitonin most commonly used?
The nasal spray is usually preferred for both convenience and tolerability. Adverse effects include mild rhinitis and rarely epistaxis. The injectable form is not often used as it can cause flushing, nausea, and redness at the site of the injection. Inhalation, tablet, and transdermal forms are being investigated in an effort to improve the bioavailability and effects of calcitonin, but are not yet available commercially.
