Who is a good candidate for teriparatide?

Anyone who is at "high risk" for a fracture and cannot tolerate or has failed a bisphosphonate should be offered treatment with teriparatide. Teriparatide was approved by the FDA in 2004 for treatment of severe osteoporosis. Individuals that are at high risk for fractures include:

  • history of a fragility fracture
  • long term use of corticosteroids
  • T score < -3.0
  • Unsatisfactory response to bisphosphonates (those who have had a fracture, in addition to a significantly declining BMD, despite 2 years of therapy with a bisphosphonate)
