Common Questions
How do I interpret a DXA report?
Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the best means to measure bone mineral density (BMD). Depending on the source of the report, you may receive a summary interpretation by a radiologist, a printout of the actual report, or both.
Keep in mind the following:
- T-score at the femoral neck is the single most important measurement.
-
- It is the best predictor of hip fracture.
- It also predicts fractures at other sites.
- It should be used in diagnostic and treatment decisions.
- A Z-score compares the patient's BMD to an age-matched mean.
- Lumbar spine mineral density is unreliable in patients over age 65 because of extra structural calcium (e.g., osteophytes).
